The cold wind and temperature can also dry out your lips in the rainy season.
You will need more than a lip balm to keep your lips smooth and soft. Add lip scrub to your skincare routine, just like a body scrub.
What is a Lip Scrub?
A lip scrub is a gentle product or substance that has tiny grain particles that are used to exfoliate the lip and remove dry skin cells leaving your skin soft and smoother. Using lip scrub will help your lip stains and lip balm to penetrate the top layer of your lips better
How to Use a Lip Scrub
To use a lip scrub, one has to be gentle because the lips are very delicate. Take note of the following before you start the process of exfoliating your skin.
- First, clean your lips and get rid of any lip stains, lipstick or lip gloss. You can use face wipes for this purpose.
- make sure to leave it a bit wet, to help the scrub glide through.
1. Apply scrub
Go ahead and apply the lip scrub with your finger or better still use a stick lip scrub. The amount of lip scrub you apply should be according to the condition of your skin. If your lips are smooth you will need just a little amount but if it is rough and flakier you will need more. Gently do this and in a circular motion
2. Evenly spread the lip scrub
Use one finger to spread the lip scrub around your lips evenly, You can spread it equally on both lips or one the lip that is flakier. Do not do this with too much pressure, remember the skin of your lips is delicate.
3. Press your lips
After spreading the lip scrub you have to press your lips by rubbing them together in a circular motion. Be firm and soft, do this for 30 to 60 seconds. If this is done right, the dead skin cells and flaky parts would scrape off. Please note, stop immediately if you feel a rip on your lip while doing this, this is a result of too much force applied.
4. Wipe your lips
Carefully use a soft towel and lukewarm water to dab your lips, wiping the lip scrub off. Do not rub them back and forth, that will rip your skin.
After exfoliating your lips, apply a hydrating lip balm or petroleum jelly to keep your lip soft and smooth and avoid chapped lips. The moisture on your lips can be sealed for hours using petroleum jelly especially if you are prone to dry or cracked lips
6. Use Lipstick
Allow the lip balm to sit for some minutes before applying a lipstick of your choice. Make sure to pat off any excess lip balm just before you use your lipstick. Always remember to wipe off your lipstick at the end of the day and apply lip balm just before you go to bed to keep your lips moisturized.
How to Exfoliate Lips with a Toothbrush
A toothbrush can be used for different purposes but most importantly brushing your teeth. You can use them to clean places in your home or your shoes when worn out. However, another effective toothbrush use is to exfoliate your lips, especially if you have chapped or flaky lips.
Next time you brush your teeth, you should try brushing your lips. Brushing your lips with a soft toothbrush can help dry, flaky skin to clear off and make your lips smooth.
Steps to Exfoliate your Lips
Firstly, You will need an exfoliant, a soft toothbrush, and one with soft bristles. A toothpaste (which can be milder than other exfoliants) can be used in this case or you can use natural exfoliants.
Here’s how you can exfoliate your lips:
- Use warm water to moisten your lips
- Gently apply your lip scrub or exfoliant on your lips.
- Use your toothbrush to brush your lips in a circular motion.
- Use warm water to rinse off the lip scrub or exfoliant
- Lastly, apply a moisturizer to your lips.
Please note; to avoid irritation, stop if you feel any harshness when exfoliating your lips, and to avoid dryness rinse off toothpaste immediately after exfoliating.
How Often should you exfoliate your lips?
Just like in the case of body scrub, moderation is key. When you exfoliate your lips too often, you may irritate your lips or damage your lips. It is advised you exfoliate your lips one to two times a week. You can exfoliate more if you do not experience any irritation or sensitivity on your lips. If you are using a toothbrush, once a week is fine.
Please note, avoid licking your lips as this leaves your lips dry, instead drink more water to keep your lips hydrated. Make sure to use the right lip balm, with SPF and without harsh flavours and scents.
Using a lip scrub is an essential part of your skincare to keep your lips dry and smooth all year round regardless of the impacts of the weather on your lips. However, you should know the right way how to use a lip scrub and the number of times you should exfoliate to avoid irritations.
